Presentation: Putting Family-Centered Neonatal Care into Practice: Introducing the Close Collaboration with Parents Framework
Kelly McGlothen-Bell

Abstract: Family-centered neonatal care is a proven approach that improves infant outcomes, strengthens parent-infant attachment, and enhances staff satisfaction. Yet, many NICUs still struggle to move from philosophy to practice. This presentation introduces the Close Collaboration with Parents (CCP) framework (Ahlqvist-Björkroth et al., 2017; 2024), an evidence-based training model that equips staff with the skills to partner with parents as primary caregivers and decision-makers. Using the lens of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) framework (Malin, 2022), we will examine the NICU as both a potential site of trauma and a unique opportunity for resilience. Participants will explore how CCP principles—staff reflection, dialogue, and integration of parents into daily care—can operationalize trauma-informed, family-centered practices. A clinical case study will illustrate practical application, highlighting how parent engagement can buffer toxic stress and support infant neurodevelopment. The session concludes with clinical and systems-level recommendations to embed family-centered care into NICU culture through staff education, leadership buy-in, and equity-focused policies. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to transform the NICU into a space that not only heals infants but also empowers and supports families.
