Biography:
Susan is native to Charlotte NC. After a career as a trained Social Worker, she became an IBCLC in 2010. Her primary interest is medically complex babies and mothers. Susan has been married for 25 years and is the mother of two daughters, 22 and 19, both preemies who changed her career path.
Shelby Mirabelli has worked in pediatric and neonatal therapy for over a decade, with experience across early intervention, outpatient, inpatient, and acute care settings. She has practiced in multiple Level III and Level IV NICUs, where she became a Board Certified Neonatal Therapist and developed expertise in evaluating and treating medically fragile infants with complex feeding and swallowing needs.
Currently, Shelby is a Level III Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. She launched Atrium Health’s first pediatric Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) program, adapting this diagnostic tool for children. Collaborating with International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), she expanded FEES use to breastfeeding infants, improving understanding of swallowing physiology and supporting personalized feeding plans.
Shelby also leads initiatives in cue-based feeding, milk drop, thickening protocols, and dysphagia management to enhance patient safety and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Shelby holds a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Stony Brook University. She has been recognized with multiple institutional awards for innovation, quality improvement, and excellence in neonatal care.
