Abstract:

Neonates with congenital heart disease (CHD) have increased and unique risks to their brain health and development, contributing to neurodevelopmental delays and mental health challenges in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Understanding these risks are critical to developing strategies to mitigate their impact and to improve long-term outcomes. In this presentation, we will; (1) discuss factors affecting brain development and brain health in neonates with CHD, (2) understand which risk factors are modifiable to inform opportunities for improvements in clinical care, and (3) explore recent literature on neuroprotective strategies in neonates with CHD. Focus will be on a multidisciplinary team approach to evidence-based clinical strategies that can be implemented during the initial NICU admission to improve immediate and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes.
