Abstract:
Perinatal palliative care (PnPC) has emerged as a key component of holistic neonatal practice, offering multidisciplinary support to families facing life-limiting fetal or neonatal conditions. Advances in prenatal diagnostics have increased recognition of these complex cases, yet service provision and integration within neonatal care remain inconsistent. This presentation explores the scope and prevalence of PnPC, outlining the central role of palliative care in addressing uncertainty, facilitating shared decision-making, and supporting parents’ hopes alongside clinical realities.
Key themes include communication approaches that balance empathy and honesty, common barriers to early referral and continuity of care, and models of integration between fetal medicine, obstetrics, and neonatology. Emphasis will be placed on how uncertainty can be navigated collaboratively—through values-based discussions, anticipatory guidance, and relational continuity—allowing care to be both realistic and compassionate. Drawing on current evidence and clinical experience, the session will highlight how embedding palliative principles within neonatal pathways enhances quality of care, supports team communication, and strengthens family trust in moments of profound vulnerability.
