Abstract:
Despite continued advances in medicine, the rate of preterm birth in the United States has been unchanged for the past two years at 10.4%. In 2023, 20,000 infants died before their first birthday, 15% owing to prematurity or low birthweight (March of Dimes, 2024). Certain morbidities often faced by preterm infants may be impacted by utilization and feeding of human milk including time to full enteral feedings and length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. In spite of a mother’s best efforts, many are unable to provide a sufficient supply of milk for their infants. In these cases, many hospitals are turning to donor human milk to offer the benefits of a human milk diet. However, in order to safely administer donor human milk, it must be pasteurized, thus impacting the nutritional and bioactive components available for absorption. This presentation will discuss the importance of a human milk-based diet, highlight the need for donor milk, discuss the effect of pasteurization on human donor milk, and how nutrition and growth are impacted by utilization of donor milk.
