Abstract:

Immature visual and auditory systems make preterm infants particularly vulnerable to constant or intense stimulation, which has been associated with altered sleep architecture, increased cardiorespiratory instability, impaired energy regulation, and delayed circadian rhythm development. Excessive noise, particularly unpredictable alarms and equipment sounds, contributes to apnea, desaturation episodes, and long-term auditory processing concerns.
Conversely, cycled light and noise-reducing interventions have been shown to improve weight gain, sleep organization, physiological stability, and parent–infant bonding. Integrating a trauma-informed lens highlights how unpredictable sensory exposures may act as threat cues, amplifying stress responses in infants who lack regulatory capacity. Evidence-based strategies—including cycled lighting, alarm management, quiet hours, flexed containment, synchronized caregiving, and parent proximity—support the infant’s neurobehavioral organization and foster safer, more predictable sensory environments. Taken together, these interventions promote improved short- and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes for vulnerable preterm infants. This presentation synthesizes current evidence on the impact of excessive light and noise on premature infants and outlines trauma-informed, developmentally supportive strategies to mitigate these effects.
